Kakao Entertainment Confirms Live-Action Adaptation of Solo Leveling

Kakao Entertainment has officially announced that a live-action drama adaptation of Solo Leveling, the hit webcomic by writer Chugong and the late artist DUBU (REDICE Studio), is in the works. The company's media division is currently overseeing the drama’s planning, development, and scriptwriting stages.

The news of a live-action adaptation first surfaced in October 2023 when French news outlet L’Internaute interviewed Heaeun Kwak, creative director of D&C WEBTOON, who revealed the Korean drama was in development.

Solo Leveling is based on a web novel of the same name and follows Jin-woo Sung, a low-ranked hunter who gains extraordinary powers, rising to become the most powerful hunter in the world. The webcomic adaptation has already achieved worldwide acclaim, inspiring video games and an anime series.

The second season of the Solo Leveling anime, titled Solo Leveling Season 2 - Arise from the Shadow-, premiered on January 4, 2025. The anime has seen immense success, ranking #1 in Amazon Prime Japan's TV Show category and landing in Netflix's top 10 in 11 countries.

Before the second season’s debut, a compilation film titled Solo Leveling - ReAwakening- was screened in Japan from November 29 to December 12, 2024. The film featured highlights from the first season and previews of the first two episodes of the second season. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures also brought the film to select theaters in the U.S. and Canada on December 6, 2024.

The anime’s first season premiered in January 2023 in Japan, with Crunchyroll streaming it internationally and later adding an English dub.

The Solo Leveling webcomic, illustrated by DUBU and based on Chugong's novel, was serialized on WEBTOON from March 2018 to December 2021. Its English editions are published by Yen Press, while digital versions of the web novel and webcomic are available on platforms like Tapas. In Japan, Kadokawa releases the webcomic under the title Ore Dake Level-Up na Ken (I’m the Only One Who Has Leveled Up).

Fans eagerly await more updates on the live-action adaptation as Solo Leveling continues to dominate across various mediums.
