Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online II Anime Set for October 4 Premiere

During the Aniplex x Kadokawa Anime Matsuri livestream event on Friday, it was announced that the second season of the anime Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, titled Gun Gale Online II, will premiere on October 4. It will air on Tokyo MX, Tochigi TV, Gunma TV, and BS11, followed by MBS and TV Aichi on October 5.

Returning to her role as the main character Llenn is Tomori Kusunoki. Other returning cast members include Yōko Hikasa as Pitohui, Chinatsu Akasaki as Fukaziroh, and Kazuyuki Okitsu as M.

Masayuki Sakoi, known for Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious, Matoi the Sacred Slayer, and Princess Resurrection, will return as the director at A-1 Pictures. The studio took over animation planning and production from Studio 3Hz in June. Yōsuke Kuroda, who has worked on titles such as My Hero Academia, Trigun, Gundam Build Fighters, and Mobile Suit Gundam 00, will oversee the series scripts. Yoshio Kosakai, known for The Marginal Service and Needless, will also return as the character designer and chief animation director.

The story follows Karen Kohiruimaki, a 183-centimeter-tall (6-foot-tall) college student who feels insecure about her height and struggles with social interactions. She finds solace in the virtual world of Gun Gale Online, where her avatar, Llenn, is under 150 centimeters (5 feet) tall and dresses in all pink. In this world, she befriends a beautiful, brown-skinned player named Pitohui. Their friendship takes a turn when Pitohui pressures her into joining "Squad Jam," a team-based Battle Royale version of the Bullet of Bullets tournament.

The anime is based on Keiichi Sigsawa's Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online light novel series, a spinoff of Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online light novel series. The first season of Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online premiered in April 2018 and consisted of 13 episodes. Aniplex of America streamed the series on Crunchyroll and Hulu and released it on Blu-ray Disc in 2019.

Yen Press is currently releasing Sigsawa's light novel series in English.
